What to do when you first start working out?

Blog by Jason De Los Santos

We know we need to exercise

This is the year. This is the year when you declare to FINALLY get in shape. You’ve mustered up the courage and decided to join a gym. Great, but what do you do once you get in the gym?

Oftentimes we avoid doing important things because we don’t know how to do them. You know you go to the gym to exercise, but how DO you exercise? No worry, because we’ll give you a few tips here to get started. Remember, everybody starts somewhere and everything worth doing is going to require hard work.

What to wear

There are times when clothes are more important than others. If clothes will help you feel more confident about feeling like you belong in the gym, then get fancy. Avoid jeans and wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely.

Will other people be watching you?

In most gyms, everybody is more concerned about what they are doing and their own insecurities. Don’t be concerned that someone is going to be watching you like a hawk from across the gym and judging you. They’re too busy looking at themselves in the mirror and taking selfies.

Learn the equipment

Most gyms in the Asheville and Hendersonville area have same-body part machines grouped together. In your first few days in your new gym, try out as many machines as possible and learn which body parts they target. You can also ask one of the gym trainers to give you a primer on which machines and equipment to start with. Better yet would be to find a friend that is experienced and ask them to show you around the gym.

Now get to work

This is where it can get confusing. Almost every person you ask will tell you a different way to exercise. There are many great options, but ultimately, it’s up to you to decide. Don’t let someone else make the decision for you without understanding why it’s the right exercise regimen for you. The important thing is to choose a workout style and remain consistent. You can purchase a book on exercise program, hire a trainer, workout with a friend, do CrossFit or find a workout online. Just stay with a program for at least 3-6 months.

What are my gym options?

There are many gym options in the Asheville and Hendersonville area. From regular gyms with nice facilities, to small boutique classes, and CrossFit, you have no shortage of options to exercise in. Here are a few places to check out that I’m familiar with:

In Hendersonville:

Rather than waiting for the perfect moment, or when you have all the information (you never will), the most important thing is to choose a gym that convenient, choose an exercise plan that makes sense, start working out and stick with it. Learn to love the process and have fun with it.
